What is a Hardware Wallet?

Quick Definition

A hardware wallet is a physical device that stores private keys offline, providing a strong security model for holding digital assets.

Full Definition

Hardware wallets are dedicated devices designed for one purpose: keeping private keys offline and secure. They generate and store keys in a secure chip that never exposes them to a connected computer or phone. When a user wants to sign a transaction, the unsigned transaction is sent to the hardware wallet, signed within the device, and then returned as a signed transaction. The private key itself never leaves the device.

This isolation is what makes hardware wallets significantly more secure than software wallets. Even if the computer or phone the hardware wallet is connected to is compromised, the private key remains protected inside the hardware. Leading hardware wallet manufacturers include Ledger and Trezor.

When to use a hardware wallet

For significant crypto holdings, hardware wallets are widely considered an essential security tool. They're the standard for self-custody at scale, used by everyone from individual long-term holders to professional crypto investors. For institutional holders, hardware wallets are typically integrated into broader custody setups that combine multisig, geographic distribution of keys, and operational controls.

Hardware wallets and Steady

STDY is compatible with all major hardware wallets that support Ethereum and Arbitrum, which is essentially every hardware wallet on the market. Holders can store STDY on a hardware wallet just like any other token, and the rebase mechanism continues to grow their position automatically while the assets stay safely in cold storage. This combination of self-custody security and automatic growth is exactly the kind of setup institutional and long-term holders want.
